Bendix-King KCS-55A Horizontal Situation Indicator (HSI)
The KCS 55A is a complete slaved compass system that includes a magnetic slaving transmitter, a slaving control and compensator unit, a directional gyro for stabilization of the system, an optional autopilot adapter and the Pictorial Navigation Indicator (PNI) itself. The panel-mounted KI 525A PNI combines the display functions of the standard directional gyro with VOR/LOC course deviation indication and glideslope deviation and flag into one compact display.
For auction is a (used) high serial number, fully-functional Bendix-King KCS-55A Horizontal Situation Indicator (HSI) system that was purchased as a spare but never installed in an aircraft. This is the dual-voltage version of the KCS-55 that will work with either 12 Vdc or 24 Vdc aircraft. The system consists of the following components:
KG-102A Directional Gyro - P/N: 060-0015-00, S/N: 47339, Mods: 1-8
KI-525A Pictorial Navigational Indicator - P/N: 066-3046-07, S/N:91170, Mods: 7-11
KMT-112 Magnetic Azimuth Transmitter - P/N: 071-1052-00, S/N: 61861, Mods: 1-2
KA-51B Slaving Accessory - P/N: 071-1242-05, S/N: 32588
Interconnect Harness Connectors
Mounting Bezel (for KI-525A)
Shock-Isolated Mounting Tray (for KG-102A)
The KG-102A and KI-525A were both recently tested and certified by Mid-Continent Instruments and are accompanied by fresh 8130-3 forms. The KMT-112 and KA-51B also come with 8130-3 forms from Wisconsin Aviation, dating to the time of my purchase of this system in mid-2010. Copies of the 8130-3 forms available upon request.
This auction also includes the Maintenance/Overhaul Manual for the KCS-55 Series along with the operationally-critical calibration procedure used to align the KCS-55 OBS to a Garmin GNS-430/430W/530/530W. The GNS calibration process is an essential part of periodic maintenance as the alignment will invariably drift over time. The King manual also includes the calibration procedure used to fine tune the magnetic compensation circuits to account for any variation in aircraft magnetic properties. Few pilots are aware that the magnetic fields within an aircraft tend to change as the aircraft accumulates flight time and any instruments that rely upon the earth's magnetic field must occasionally be adjusted to account for this gradual drift.

Guidelines for Rating Seller’s DSRs (Detailed Seller Ratings)
Item as Described
- 5 - Item meets or exceeds description in auction. There is no undisclosed damage to the item when received and item was shipped by the method stated in the auction OR if there was damage or other issue (confusing description, etc.) the seller willingly addresses the issue and resolves it with the buyer.
- 4 - Item may have MINOR cosmetic damage that was not disclosed but generally does meet the description OR seller is somewhat hesitant or accusatory when contacted with an issue but ultimately resolves it with the buyer.
- 3 - Item has more significant damage or issues that was not disclosed in the auction - to a point where the buyer is not happy. Seller is hesitant in responding. Seller ultimately does make good with the buyer, but it requires more effort on the buyer than it should.
- 2 - Item has more significant damage or issues that was not disclosed in the auction - to a point where the buyer is not happy. Buyer is forced to file Paypal or eBay claim, but seller ultimately refunds or otherwise makes good on the sale.
- 1 - Item has more significant damage or issues that was not disclosed in the auction - to a point where the item was misrepresented and the buyer is totally unhappy. Seller will not stand behind the item and buyer is forced to file Paypal or eBay claim, through conclusion.
Communication
- 5 - Seller lets the buyer know when item is shipped via PayPal or email. If any issues come up during the transaction, the seller responds quickly and helps buyer to resolve them. NOTE: Sellers may let buyers know that item is shipped in a variety of ways - email communication, feedback, or Paypal notification.
- 4 - Seller may or may not let the buyer know when item is shipped. Seller may be somewhat slow to respond to issues, but does help buyer resolve them after communication is established. NOTE: Buyers should allow 1 business day before considering the seller slow in responding. I would suggest a minimum of a "4" rating for any smooth transaction even if seller does not communicate with the buyer.
- 3 - Seller may or may not let buyer know when item is shipped. Seller is slow to respond to issues, but does help buyer ultimately resolve these.
- 2 - Buyer is forced to use Paypal or eBay claim to initiate any communication, but after the communication is established, seller works with buyer to address issues.
- 1 - Buyer is forced to use Paypal or eBay claim. Seller is still unresponsive.
Shipping Time
- 5 - Seller ships within the stated date in the auction (We ship at the latest 5 business days after payment is received.)
- 4 - Seller ships 1-2 days after the stated date.
- 3 - Seller ships 3-4 days after the stated date.
- 2 - Seller ships 5 days after the stated date.
- 1 - Seller ships longer than 6 days after the stated date.
Shipping and Handling Charges
- 5 - Shipping charges are reasonable for the packaging and service provided. Buyer should consider packaging costs along with the actual shipping fees charged by the shipper.
- 4 - Shipping charges are high. Seller complied with the terms of the auctions, item was shipped by the method stated and item was packaged commensurate with the item being shipped.
- 3 - Shipping charges are high AND the packaging and service is below what is to be expected. Item was received undamaged but because of packaging, there was a strong potential for the item to be damaged. Item was shipped via a cheaper method than was stated in the auction.
- 2 - Shipping charges are VERY HIGH and the item was poorly packaged or shipped via a cheaper method than was stated in the auction. Item was damaged as a result of poor packaging. In this category, I may also include sellers who contact buyer for extra shipping costs, if buyers agree to it and the packaged was shipped and received as otherwise stated.
- 1 - Seller contacts buyer for extra shipping after the auction and refuses to ship without it. (Seller may ask for extra shipping if it was specified in the auction description.)
