1998 MAULE MXT-180A, ONLY 801 HOURS SNEW AF&E, NOSE GEAR COLLAPSED, CHEAP !!

THIS IS A VERY LATE MODEL MAULE, FULL OF HISTORY, BUT UP TO DATE AS FAR AS LAYOUT AND MODERN FEATURES !!

MAULES ARE KNOWN AS GREAT BACK-COUNTRY AIRPLANES, WITH GREAT UTILITY.

THEY ARE ALSO KNOWN AS GOOD PERFORMERS, WITH EARLIER VERSIONS HAVING NAMES LIKE "ROCKET" AND "SUPER SKY ROCKET".    THIS ONE WAS NAMED "COMET".  MY FAVORITE PAINTING OF A MAULE WAS A DEMONSTRATION PUT ON BY THE FACTORY IN THE LATE 1960'S OF AN EARLY MAULE BECOMING AIRBORNE AS IT LEAVES THE FACTORY DOOR.  THEY CLEARED OUT THE FACTORY FLOOR, AND THE AIRPLANE BECAME AIRWORTHY IN ONLY THE FEW HUNDRED FEET THE FACTORY WAS WIDE !!  REALLY COOL.

WELL SINCE THOSE DAYS, THE AIRPLANE HAS SEEN MANY IMPROVEMENTS.

FOR INCREASED UTILITY, THE MODERN 7 SERIES MAULES HAVE A FRONT DOOR AND ALSO A DOUBLE "BARN DOOR" ARRANGEMENT ON THE RIGHT SIDE, SO ALMOST THE WHOLE RIGHT SIDE OPENS UP !!  SINCE THE REAR SEAT CAN BE REMOVED EASILY AND QUICKLY, THE WHOLE BACK FUSELAGE IS ACCESSIBLE FOR STORAGE !!

ONE OF THE PROBLEMS WITH MOST MAULE MODELS IS THEY HAVE STUCK WITH THE TAILDRAGGER LANDING GEAR, WHICH MOST PROS PREFER FOR BUSH FLYING, BUT WHICH CAN AND DOES BITE EVEN THE MOST EXPERIENCED PILOTS WHEN LANDING IN CERTAIN CONDITION.

THIS AIRPLANE IS A FACTORY MXT-180A, WHICH MEANS IT HAS TRICYCLE GEAR, THE NORM FOR MOST AIRPLANES BUILT TODAY.

MODERN DASH LAYOUT, ENGINE INSTRUMENTATION, BRAKING SYSTEM, LIGHTING, AND LOADS OF SMALL IMPROVEMENTS MAKE THIS AIRPLANE 30 YEARS BETTER THAN THE EARLY MAULES.

THIS AIRPLANE HAS ONLY 801 HOURS TOTAL TIME SINCE NEW ON THE AIRFRAME AND ON THE ENGINE !!

NOW THAT IS LOW !!!

THE LYCOMING 0-360 ENGINE HAS THE SAME 801 SINCE NEW !!  ONLY ONE LOGBOOK FOR EACH OF COURSE, AND THE LYCOMING PRODUCTION CERTIFICATE WAS ISSUED LATE 1997 !! (THIS, LIKE ALL LYCOMING 4 CYLINDER ENGINES IS A 2000 HOUR BETWEEN RECOMMENDED OVERHAULS ENGINE) !!

THIS AIRPLANE IS EQUIPPED WITH THE FACTORY OPTIONAL LONG RANGE FUEL TANKS (2 TANKS IN EACH WING), SO WITH THE 8.5-9 GALLONS PER HOUR ENGINE, THIS HAS TO BE ONE OF THE LONGEST ENDURANCE PRODUCTION AIRPLANES MADE !!  

THE COOL THING ABOUT LONG RANGE TANKS IS YOU ONLY USE THEM IF YOU NEED THEM.  MOST OF THE TIME THEY ARE EMPTY, BUT OH WHEN YOU WANT THEM, THEY CAN BE A LIFESAVER !!

THIS LOW TIME AIRPLANE HAS SUFFERED TWO INDIGNITIES

THE FIRST WAS A HARD NOSE LANDING, WHICH COLLAPSED THE NOSE LEG SUPPORT (WHICH IS ON THE BOTTOM OF THE TUBULAR ENGINE MOUNT)

RESULTING IN LOWER COWL DAMAGE (IT IS FIBERGLASS, AND REPAIRABLE), LOWER FIREWALL AND FIRST BELLY SKIN WRINKLING (THE MAULE HAS A TUBULAR FRAMEWORK, AND THE BELLY SKIN IS "POP" RIVITED TO IT, IT IS NOT PART OF THE STRUCTURE LIKE A CESSNA OR PIPER CHEROKEE.

THE OTHER INDIGNITY WAS THAT I HAVE LEFT THIS AIRPLANE UNREPAIRED FOR YEARS.

AS AN AVID PILOT AND A7P MECHANIC, THE IDEA OF A NEAT AIRPLANE LIKE THIS IN ADDITION TO MY CROSS-COUNTRY CRUISER MOONEY WAS VERY ENTICING.  

I LOVE LONG RANGE FUEL, AND MY IN-LAWS HAVE A FARM ABOUT 3 HOURS DRIVE FROM MY HOUSE.  I ALWAYS WANTED TO FLY IN, AND THE 4 SEATS AND OPEN BAGGAGE CAPABILITY OF THIS AIRPLANE SEEMED PERFECT FOR THAT MISSION.

ALAS, IT WAS NOT TO BE.

DEMANDS OF RUNNING WENTWORTH AIRCRAFT AND HELPING MY WIFE RAISE OUR 3 KIDS GAVE ME NO TIME FOR "PROJECTS" OF MY OWN.  IRONIC, REALLY, AS I SELL MORE PROJECT AIRPLANES THAN ANYONE ELSE IN THE WORLD !!

NOW WE SELDOM GO TO THE FARM, AND WHEN WE DO, THERE ARE TOO MANY FOR THE MAULE ANYWAY.

I RECENTLY HAD A HANGER THAT I OWN GET DAMAGED  WITH A HIGH STRAIGHT LINE WIND EVENT.  LUCKILY, NONE OF THE CONTENTS WERE DAMAGED, BUT THE INSURANCE COMPANY TOTALED THE BUILDING, SO I WAS FORCED TO MOVE THE CONTENTS INTO OTHER HANGERS.  THE SUDDEN LACK OF SPACE HAS MADE ME REALIZE THAT I AM HOLDING ON TO SOME AIRPLANES I SHOULD NOT BE, AND THIS IS THE FIRST TO GO.

IN ADDITION TO THE LOWER COWL AND FUSELAGE DAMAGE, THERE IS DAMAGE TO THE RIGHT WINGTIP SKIN AND FIBERGLASS TIP, AND A CUT IN THE LEFT WING LEADING EDGE THAT I DON'T REMEMBER BEING THERE, SO I BELIEVE WE CAUSED IT DURING IT'S TIME IN STORAGE. TWO OF THE LIFT STRUTS ARE BENT (ONE SIDE), WHILE THE OTHER TWO ARE FINE. BOTH FLAPS AND 1 AILERON HAVE LITTLE DINGS OR PINCHES ON THE TRAILING EDGES.

THE LEFT ELEVATOR (FABRIC COVERED) IS DAMAGED, AND THE RIGHT ELEVATOR AND HORIZONTAL ARE BOTH DESTROYED

THE NOSEGEAR ITSELF IS NOT DESTROYED HOWEVER.  THE CHROME  TUBE BROKE OFF  AT THE FORK MOUNTING POINT, SO IT WILL REQUIRE A TUBE, AND THE FRONT SCISSORS IS BENT, BUT THE FORK AND NOSEWHEEL ARE STILL STRAIGHT, AND THE UPPER TUBE AND STEERING COLLAR LOOK OK AS WELL

THE MAIN GEAR LEGS ARE HEAVY DUTY, AND THEY ARE FINE, AS ARE THE GEAR ATTACH POINTS IN THE FUSELAGE.

THE HEAVY DUTY 7:00X6 MAINS AND 600:X6 NOSE TIRES HAVE ABOUT 50 HOURS SINCE NEW ON THEM.

THE CABIN AND REAR FUSELAGE ARE UNDAMAGED, AND THE DOORS FIT AND SHUT WELL.

THE ENGINE HAS SUFFERED A PROP STRIKE, SO IT WILL REQUIRE AN INSPECTION, BUT OF COURSE NOT AN OVERHAUL BECAUSE OF IT'S LOW TOTAL TIME.  

THE SPINNER DOME IS DENTED

INSIDE THE SEATS ARE UNRIPPED AND DO NOT LOOK WORN AT ALL. JUST A LITTLE DUSTY AND DIRTY

FROM SITTING.

BE AWARE THAT THE AIRPLANE HAS BEEN INSIDE OUR HANGER SINCE WE GOT IT, SO IT HASN'T BEEN EXPOSED TO THE ELEMENTS, AND OUR CLIMATE IS SALT-FREE, SO WE HAVE VERY LITTLE ISSUES WITH CORROSION.  THIS AIRPLANE LOOKS AS GOOD AS YOU WOULD EXPECT WITH IT'S YOUNG AGE.

YOU WILL NOTICE THAT MOST OF THE FLIGHT INSTRUMENTS  HAVE BEEN REMOVED.  THIS HAPPENED WHEN IT FIRST CAME TO US, AND I STOPPED MY GUYS FROM TAKING ANYTHING ELSE OFF, SO IT HAS NOT BEEN CANNABLIZED FURTHER.  THE AIRSPEED INDICATOR WOULD HAVE BEEN HARD TO DUPLICATE, AND IT'S STILL INSTALLED, AS ARE VSI, CLOCK, HOBBS, TACH AND FUEL PRESSURE. ALL ENGINE INSTRUMENTATION AND SWITCHGEAR IS INTACT, AND EVEN THE STROBES (ONE OF THE FIRST THING WE WOULD NORMALLY TAKE) ARE INTACT.

I WOULD GO WITH AN ASPEN, OR MAYBE THE COOL NEW GLASS INSTRUMENTS FROM GARMIN IF I WAS DOING IT TODAY, BUT SINCE IM NOT, YOU CAN DO IT HOWEVER YOU PLEASE.

SOLD WITH AIRWORTHINESS CERTIFICATE, FAA BILL OF SALE, AND EVEN THE KEYS !!

REGISTRATION HAS EXPIRED, BUT THE AIRPLANE CAN BE REREGISTERED AFTER REPAIR WITH THE SAME N NUMBER, IT HASNT BEEN CANCELED..

I WOULD LOVE TO SEE SOMEBODY FIX THIS VERY REPAIRABLE AIRPLANE BACK UP !!

AS FATE WOULD HAVE IT, JUST THIS WEEK I BOUGHT A WINDSTORM DAMAGED 1995 MAULE MX7-160.  THIS AIRPLANE SEEMS TO HAVE GOOD TAIL FEATHERS, SO WENTWORTH AIRCRAFT MAY BE ABLE TO SUPPLY SOME REPAIR PARTS, AT SEPARATE COST, IF THE BUYER DESIRES THEM, OR OF COURSE THEY ARE AVAILABLE FROM THE MAULE FACTORY (STILL GOING IN MOULTRIE, GEORGIA,) OR USED ON THE MARKET.
