1947 NORTH AMERICAN NAVION , 4842 TT, IO-520 CONVERSION, COMPLETE AIRFRAME, LIGHT DAMAGE.

THE NAVION IS THE FAMILY AIRPLANE THAT LOOKS LIKE A WARBIRD !!

BUILT BY NORTH AMERICAN AVIATION, AFTER THE P-51 MUSTANG AND BEFORE THE F-86 SABRE JET, SO THESE PEOPLE KNEW HOW TO BUILD AN AIRPLANE !!

AND THE IDEA MADE SENSE AS WELL.  TO APPEAL TO THE 10’S OF THOUSANDS OF PILOTS WHO WERE TRAINED DURING THE WAR, IT MADE SENSE FOR THE MARKET TO DESIRE A TRUE 4 PLACE AIRPLANE WITH THE LOOK AND FEEL OF A FIGHTER !!

SLIDING CANOPY, HIGH STANCE, P-51 LOOK TAIL, GOOD HANDLING QUALITIES, RUGGED AND RELIABLE !

THE MARKET RESPONDED PRETTY WELL IN 1946 AND 1947, AND NORTH AMERICAN BUILT 1,100 OF THE AIRPLANES, BEFORE SELLING THE DESIGN AND PRODUCTION RIGHTS TO RYAN, IN ORDER TO CONCENTRATE ON THE NEW F-86.

RYAN BUILT THE “A” MODEL IN 1947-1949, THEN THE “B” MODEL WAS INTRODUCED.

THE LOGBOOKS WE HAVE ONLY GO BACK TO 1968, WITH THE ORIGINAL LOG STATED AS BEING LOST, SO WE CANT ACTUALLY TELL THE PRODUCTION DATE, BUT THE SERIAL NUMBER IS NAV-4-767, AND ALL OF THE INFO SEEMS TO DENOTE THAT THIS IS ONE OF THE NORTH AMERICAN PLANES, NOT A RYAN.

NOT THAT THIS IS THE SAME AIRPLANE THAT CAME OUT OF THE NORTH AMERICAN FACTORY !!

HEAVILY UPDATED, THIS AIRPLANE HAS HAD THE MOST DESIREABLE MOD ADDED, PROVISION FOR MOUNTING THE 285 H.P. IO-520 ENGINE !!

IF YOU THINK THAT MOUNTING A MODERN ENGINE, WITH 100 MORE H.P. THAN THE AIRPLANE CAME WITH, AND A MODERN 3 BLADE PROPELLOR, WOULD GIVE YOU OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE, YOU WOULD BE RIGHT !!

THIS AIRPLANE HAS ALSO HAD THE DASH UPDATED, THE WINDSHIELD REPLACED WITH THICK 1 PIECE GLASS, THE SIDE WINDOWS REPLACED WITH THICK 1 PIECE GLASS, AND THE LATE STYLE FUEL SELECTOR ADDED.

EVEN THOUGH WE DON’T HAVE THAT FIRST LOG, WE HAVE 337’S AND OTHER PAPERWORK DATING BACK TO THE 1950’S AND EARLY 1960’S

THIS IS A PRETTY AIRPLANE, WITH A MODERN SCHEME AND COLORS.

THE PREVIOUS OWNER WAS IN LOVE WITH THIS AIRPLANE, AND SHOWERED IT WITH ATTENTION.

AS A CURRENT AIRSHOW PILOT, HE TOLD ME THAT THE TIME CONSTRAINTS OF HIS JOB DID NOT ALLOW HIM TO FLY THE NAVION AS MUCH AS HE LIKED, BUT HE ENJOYED THE TIME HE SPENT IN IT AND WORKING ON IT.

HE WAS THE PILOT THE DAY THE LINKAGE BROKE ON THE RIGHT MAIN GEAR!

THE GEAR LEG FOLDED OUT, AND EVENTUALLY FOLDED BACK, GETTING CAUGT UNDER THE RIGHT FLAP.

HE LOST CONTROL, OF COURSE, SO HE COULDN’T STEER AWAY FROM THAT ONE SMALL FENCE POST, WHICH HIT THE LEADING EDGE OF THE RIGHT WING.

THE DAMAGE IS TO THE RIGHT GEAR LEG AND LINKAGE, THE RIGHT FLAP, AND THE RIGHT WING LEADING EDGE (DENTED)

THE RIGHT WING COVER SKIN OVER THE FLAP IS SLIGHTLY LIFTED, BUT IT IS BELIEVED THAT IS ONLY FROM THE DENTED FLAP PUSHIN UP ON IT.

THERE DOES NOT SEEM TO BE ANY DAMAGE TO THE RIGHT WINGTIP, NOR THE RIGHT AILERON.

THE NOSE AND LEFT MAIN GEARS DID NOT FOLD UP OR GET DAMAGED IN ANY WAY, SO THE BELLY AND NOSE COWL WERE NOT DAMAGED.

THAT’S LUCKY, BECAUSE AS YOU CAN SEE IN THE PHOTOS, THIS AIRPLANE HAS THE KEEL MODIFIED TO ACCEPT THE IO-520 ENGINE !!

ALTHOUGH THE ENGINE AND 3 BLADE PROP WERE NOT DAMAGED, WE HAVE REMOVED THEM FROM THE AIRCRAFT AND THEY ARE NOT INCLUDED IN THIS SALE.  I DID NOT WANT TO MAKE THE ENGINES RELATIVELY HIGH TIME SINCE MAJOR NEGATIVELY AFFECT THE INTEREST IN THIS NICE AIRFRAME.

IO-520’S ARE PREVELANT, AND YOU MAY ALREADY HAVE ONE OR KNOW OF ONE THAT WOULD BE PERFECT FOR THIS AIRPLANE.

THE ENGINE WAS REMOVED PROFESSIONALLY, SO ALL LINES AND CONTROLS WERE UNBOLTED, NOT CUT.

INSIDE, YOU WILL SEE THE MODERN DASH LAYOUT, ALL MODERN FLIGHT INSTRUMENTS STILL INSTALLED, AS WELL AS TRAYS STILL WIRED UP FOR A COMPLETE KING RADIO PACKAGE(PANEL UNITS AND INDICATORS NOT INSTALLED, BUT AVAILABLE EVERYWHERE.

THE GREY CLOTH INTERIOR IS MODERN AND NICE, WITH VINYL ACCENTS
