For sale: Mooney M20C. His name is “Chuck”. My wife named him that because she says he’s a very masculine airplane. She outta know, she has over 13,000 hours flying all kinds of airplanes. I’ve got a little experience myself. I currently fly a B-777 for one of the big 3. A lot of my experience comes from my years in general aviation. I’ve been around the block a few times and know a lot about flying. I know what works and what doesn’t. I’ve been a bush pilot, instructor, designated examiner, Captain, mentor and yes I was once a  fledgling pilot trying to figure it out. Even my daughter is a pilot. She just turned 20 and about to finish her CFI. I only mention this because I want you to know what I’m offering with the sale of Chuck. By the way, I’m selling him because I have 2 Mooney’s and my other one has a longer body and electric landing gear which suits my 100 pound daughter better. My wife and I personally like the Johnson bar on Chuck because it’s extremely reliable. (I’m sure my wife will have a tear in her eye when Chuck departs our small fleet for good) I bought Chuck because it’s so expensive to rent vs own. A lot different when I learned to fly for $20/hr. These days a basic C172 costs north of $120/hr. Chuck burns about 8-10 gal/hr. At $5.50/gal it costs about $50/hr. There is more costs associated with owning an airplane but if you use my mobile mechanic Nick at  you get a comprehensive annual for $500/year. There’s also insurance and tie down but when you consider the convenience of going out and hopping into your own plane whenever you want, there’s no better bargain. I don’t know how kids will be able to afford the FAA’s new ATP 1500hr requirement to become employable with the airlines. Unless you figure out how to get your flying costs down, it doesn’t pencil out to rent vs own. Another reason to buy Chuck is he’ll fit 4 people (barely) and scoot along at respectable speeds. I regularly see speeds of 155 knots while sipping fuel. Chuck is considered to be a complex aircraft because of the retractable gear and constant speed prop but you can always fly him like a Cessna. Doing pattern work? Just leave the gear and prop alone and keep it simple. For a time, Mooney built a fixed gear version for folks that wanted a training airplane. Now when you get comfortable with going fast, it does require more finesse. Hand flying, operating LOP (lean of peak), slowing down without shock cooling the engine require more skill but it’s very manageable with a little training. Speaking of autopilot, Chuck doesn’t have one but he’s very stable and I’ve had people that have never flown be able to hold a heading and altitude within +- 200’ in no time and honestly I’ve seen a lot of pilots become dependent on autopilots and glass and It shows when they actually have to hand fly. Chuck also has the legacy instruments that certifies him to be IFR. In fact, you can legally shoot an actual approach to 200’ minimums in him. Personally, I wouldn’t feel comfortable flying any single engine airplane with my family on board to IFR minimums. I absolutely would do it simulated IFR and I’d fly it in actual IFR or VFR on top if there isn’t ice and the ceiling and visibility isn’t too low. I know a lot of people want to buy something more updated with a glass cockpit and a parachute and if you have a spare $500,000, I don’t blame you. But if you do what I recommend and use foreflight on your Ipad, you get everything you need for a crap load less money. Foreflight with stratus gives you moving map, terrain, traffic, attitude indicator….you get a glass cockpit for pennies on the dollar while out pacing the cirrus with all the bells and whistles. You just can’t beat a Mooney for flying cheap! When you share the costs with another safety pilot, now you’re really flying cheap! If you’re thinking about buying a Mooney for yourself or someone you love, this is what I’m offering. You get Chuck, you get my commitment to show you how to fly him right. (Even though my CFI is long expired, I can teach you what you need to know and help you fulfill the insurance requirement) You get to stay at my place in Virginia and you get my help flying him home. If you are on the airline track, my wife and I will spend lots of time mentoring you for that too. (I used to hire for my airline and know what it takes)

I hope I’ve given you a glimpse of who we are and what you are bidding on and hope I’ve helped you recognize you are purchasing way more then an airplane!! If you are a serious buyer, please feel free to contact me at  and I’d be happy to answer any questions.
