Up for sale is my Travel Air 4000. It's a good looking old bird that is freshly restored and annualed in the Standard Category ready to give scenic rides or accompany a flying museum etc. I acquired her about three years ago from a old mechanic in Ohio. He had got the plane in the late 80's. He said it was ground looped in the 40's and put in storage for the rest of the 20th century (hence the low time). He preceded to rebuild the plane from the ground up through the late 90's and early 2000's (I've included some of his pictures). He finished a few years ago only to start having bad health and after only flying the plane a couple times he decided to sell. I went up and bought it thinking I would be flying it soon only to realize it would take a long time to get all the paperwork straight. He had never annulled it and the Lyc. R680-13 225hp motor and engine mount were never approved.. So after a couple years of off and on work at the local FBO going through the plane recovering the control surfaces to add inspection holes, re doing the wiring, getting the engine and mount approved etc. it's finally ready to enjoy. I've flown it around a bit but am in a different financial position now and would like to sell before winter.
None of the old airframe logs are present but there is a lot of old pilot logs, supplemental paperwork, blueprints etc. the TT was estimated from pilot logs. The engine was overhauled by Radial Engines Ltd in Guthrie OK. The prop is a ground adjustable McCauley with 18.9 hours since inspection and recondition. It is basic VFR and currently has no radios. Seats two up front with removable stick and the pilot in the back, very roomy. Has the old expander tube brakes that aren't great but hey they are a lot better than the originals!! Plus you'll not have to worry about putting it on its nose like people do sometimes with the Cleveland's. Feel free to call and ask questions and come to look before bidding.
