NORTHSTAR M3 APPROACH GPS NAVIGATOR
Serial Number: AL10132.
This unit is in excellent condition and was working very well when
removed. The internal non-volatile memory battery was
replaced this spring. The new battery has a life of 7 years or more.
This receiver comes with a Jeppesen data card, mounting tray and backplate. The backplate does not have the large 36-pin connector, but this connector is not required for a VFR installation.
If you would like to have a GPS in your airplane inexpensively, or you would like to replace your dead Northstar Loran, this is a great way to do it on a budget. These units cost over $6000 new, but you can install this one for a tiny fraction of that figure. This unit has an incredible list of built-in features that are easy to use. The accuracy is amazing. Parked on the ramp, the Northstar reported the distance to my airport as .1 nm, which just happens to be the distance from my parking spot to the center of the runway.
Functions:
Pre-flight planning - The unit can tell you the distance and bearing to
your destination, the distance and bearing of any leg in your flight plan, or
the total flight plan distance. It can also tell you if any portion of your
flight plan will pass through restricted airspace.
Position finding - When operating in flight, the M3 always knows where it
is and can provide the bearing and distance to any point in the database.
Direct navigation- Regardless of your location, you can choose a
destination from any waypoint in the database, and the M3 will guide you there
directly.
Route navigation - The M3 can automatically follow any of 100 programmable user
routes, as well as any Victor airway or Jet route.
Controlled airspace alert - If your current or future track will take you
near restricted airspace, the Airalert feature will warn you and either help
you avoid the airspace or enter it legally
Features:
High intensity alphanumeric LED display - The left and right sides are
independent, allowing you to tailor the information to your needs. Automatic
brightness control makes certain that the display is readable in sunlight, but
not too bright at night.
Pilot-focused operations - The M3 has great features for pilots, such as
the Airalert airspace warning (Class B, Class C, SUA). There is also an
internal electronic CDI. The full range of standard GPS navigation calculations
are included.
Ease of use - The best feature of the M3 is its ultra simple and
straightforward operation. Even the controls are simple, with dual concentric
knobs and illuminated pushbuttons. This GPS proves that powerful does not have
to be complicated.
Peace of mind - An emergency search will bring up the closest airports,
based on your current position.
Database capability - The Jeppesen database is comprehensive. It includes
the following: Airports (including frequencies, elevation, and runway data),
VOR, NDB, Intersections, Class B, Class C, and Special Use Airspace (SUA),
Victor and Jet airways, and GPS approaches. There is also space for 250
user-defined waypoints and 100 user routes (flight plans).
The M3 Approach GPS is compatible with an external CDI, HSI, Autopilot, Flight Director, and Blind Encoder. Even though this GPS does not have an internal Moving Map, it may be used to provide position information to an external Moving Map. It will also connect with an Electronics International FP-5L fuel computer which will then compute required fuel to destination, miles per gallon, and other information.
REPLACING PRIOR NORTHSTAR INSTALLATIONS
M1 Loran installations
may retain the same mounting tray, but the rear connector plate will need to
be replaced or modified. External CDI,
NAV flag, and three annunciator outputs, if installed, are compatible with the
M3. The GPS antenna must replace the loran antenna - the same coax may be used,
but the loran antenna coupler must be removed.
The M1 cooling fan, if installed, will be acceptable for use with the
M3.
· M2 GPS/Loran installations may retain the same mounting tray and connectors. External CDI and flag connections are identical to the M3. The four M2 annunciators may be retained with the following recommended changes:
· "WARN" should be re-labelled "MSG" and the color should be changed from red to amber
· "VFR" should be re-labelled "APCH" and the color should be green or blue
The 8100 remote GPS sensor used with the M2, if installed, should be removed. Antenna wiring must be modified such that the GPS antenna is connected to the tray rather than to the remote sensor.
