1997 VANS RV-6A, 160 H.P., 625TTAF/625 SMOH, FLIPPED ON LANDING, CHEAP PROJECT !!
THIS WAS A NICE LITTLE RV-6A, WELL MAINTAINED AND BUILT.
USED JUST FOR FUN, NOT VERY MANY LONG CROSS COUNTRY FLIGHTS
VERY LOW TOTAL TIME ON THE AIRFRAME OF 620
LYCOMING 160 H.P. 0-320 HAS ONLY 620 SMOH IN 1997
GOOD MAINTENANCE, INCLUDING ANNUAL/CONDITION INSPECTION IN 2015
LAST ENTRY IN ENGINE LOGBOOK WAS REPLACEMENT OF OIL FILTER ADAPTER GASKET BY OWNER.
CAN YOU GUESS THE REST OF THE STORY?
8.6 HOURS AFTER REPLACING THE GASKET, THE OWNER/PILOT NOTICES A BURNING SMELL, OIL COMING FROM THE COWLING SEAMS, AND STARTING TO COVER HIS WINDSHIELD, AND THE OIL PRESSURE DROPPED.
HE TURNS THE ENGINE OFF, AND HEADS FOR THE NEAREST AIRPORT, WHICH TURNS OUT TO BE SANDUSKY, MICHIGAN.
HE DIDNT MAKE IT TO THE RUNWAY, BUT LANDS ON THE GRASS, COLLAPSES THE NOSE GEAR, AND FLIPS THE AIRPLANE OVER.
WHEN THEY REMOVED THE COWL, THE OIL FILTER WAS EITHER VERY LOOSE, OR COMPLETELY UNSCREWED (I HEARD IT BOTH WAYS)
IT APPEARS THAT THE OWNER REPLACED A GASKET, AND IMPROPERLY MOUNTED THE SPIN ON OIL FILTER
THE ENGINE DID NOT FREEZE UP AND THE PILOT SHUT IT DOWN AT THE FIRST SIGN OF TROUBLE. IT TURNS OVER FREELY NOW.
THE PROPELLOR IS BENT BACK ON ONE BLADE
THE SPINNER IS SMASHED
THE LOWER FIBERGLASS COWL HAS A CHUNK OUT OF IT, BUT IT IS INTACT OTHERWISE
THE MAJOR DAMAGE IS TO THE WINDSHIELD FRAME AND THE SLIDER CANOPY FRAME
IN ADDITION, THE VERTICAL FIN AND RUDDER ARE DESTROYED
THERE IS DAMAGE TO THE FUSELAGE JUST BEHIND THE CABIN, ON THE TURTLE-DECK AND UNDER THE BELLY, FROM THE VERTICAL IMPACTING
BOTH MAIN LANDING GEAR ARE SPLAYED OUT (THEY ATTACH TO THE ENGINE MOUNT)
THE RIGHT WING HAS DENTS ALONG THE LEADING EDGE AND OUTBOARD, AND THE LEFT WING HAS ONLY A VERY FEW SMALL DENTS
THE CABIN IS INTACT, AND WELL FINISHED OUT
