The owner of this
Ercoupe spent the better part of the 2014 having N99047 restored. This was not a backyard project. All work was performed by a licensed A&P, IA. The owner intended this to be his “fun plane”
for blue sky flying for $100 hamburgers.
He uses his other aircraft, a Mitsubishi MU-2, for 300 knot cross
country trips. No expense was spared to make this Ercoupe a safe, well appointed,
handsome bird. The engine, a Continental
C-90, has only 190 hours since major.
This engine develops 95 HP, making N99047 a stellar performer. I flew her last week and was indicating 800
FPM climb at 80 MPH (it was a cold day). She is a 415C so the gross weight is
1260, easily increased to 1320 with the purchase of the STC from Alpha Aviation
for only $200.00. The engine has a light
weight starter from Sky-Tec. In addition,
the old, heavy generator was removed, replaced by the light weight and powerful
Plane-Power alternator. A spin on oil
filter was added, too. The engine
compartment is clean as a whistle. New
valve cover gaskets were recently installed.
In 2014, the entire airframe was stripped, acid etched, alodined and
painted. The interior is new, a
beautiful sky blue and steel grey fabric and vinyl, by Airtex. Wings recovered last year with Ceconite. It has the extended baggage compartment,
eliminating the small canvas bag behind the seat. Also installed in 2014 was an
STC’d inertial seatbelt/shoulder restraint system. Visibility at night will not be a problem
with landing lights in the wing and on each landing gear leg, controlled by
separate switches. All the fuses were
replaced with circuit breakers. The
panel is beautiful! All the engine
gauges are new Mitchell products. The com, a Microair 760 has a built-in
intercom as well as memory channels for storage of your most used
frequencies. It also has a “priority”
mode which allows you to listen to one frequency (ATIS) while the radio
monitors another (Tower). If Tower calls, the radio will switch automatically. Also recently installed and certified is a
new Sandia STX 165 transponder. This all
solid state unit is not only a transponder and encoder, but has three timer
functions and a pressure altitude display.
All this great new technology fits perfectly with the original Ercoupe
pretzel yokes with PTT switches on both. The wings are fabric and in perfect
condition. The nav lights keep you legal
for night operation. This Ercoupe has the highly desired “split tail” mod found
on the later E models. It doesn’t have rudder pedals. Braking is no problem with Cleveland brakes. There really isn’t much more you can do to
make this aircraft better then it is.
There are a couple of items that are not perfect. One, the windows, while perfectly functional,
have a little haze. The fairing where
the wing attaches to the fuselage has a few dimples (people pushing the
aircraft from them). All the logs are available
from 1946. The aircraft is free of any
liens or encumbrances. The annual
inspection was completed December, 2014.
Aircraft is located at N07 in NJ.
