1981 MOONEY 305 ROCKET, SERIAL #1, PROP STRIKE DAMAGE, CHEAP!

The Mooney ROCKET conversion is the Holy Grail of speed to the Mooney faithful (called “Mooniacs”, like the Comanche 400 is to the Piper folks (the Rocket is much faster than the 400 Comanche!)

This conversion, performed by Rocket Engineering of Spokane Washington, takes the already fast stock Mooney M20K “231” and replaces the 210 H.P. Continental turbocharged 6 cylinder engine with a 305 H.P. TSIO-520NB, turbocharged 6 cylinder found in Cessna 340 and 414 twins!

As you can imagine, the addition of almost 50% more H.P. with the same size and shape airplane creates some numbing numbers, such as a cruise speed of 220-225 knots true at higher altitude and 200 knots at normal cruise altitudes!

The airplane for sale here is the first production ROCKET 305 produced by Rocket Engineering.   The S.T.C. paperwork shows serial number 0001 ! 

N number is N305PF

Purchased by Irv Feher, an aircraft dealer who liked the airplane so much he forged an exclusive distributorship with Rocket Engineering to sell the ROCKET conversions!!!

Irv set a record with this aircraft in the 1997 Great Cross Country Air race, where it came in FIRST PLACE of the production modified class from Denver to Oshkosh!!

Upgraded with additional options, such as long range fuel, speed brakes and upswept wingtips to make long, fast cross-country travel possible and comfortable!

But it’s most recent flight did not go as well for this airplane!

At the last Annual inspection in December of 2025, the shop who has been doing all of the inspections and maintenance of this airplane for over 10 years did a reseal job on the wet wing fuel tanks.

3 months later, in March of 2026, the owner brought the airplane back in as it was leaking worse than before.

The shop gooped the seams up even more and sent the owner of the airplane on his way.

The first flight after the sealant was added, the airplane engine shut off in flight!

Changing tanks and adding boost pump made no difference!

SOMEWHERE IN THE FUEL SYSTEM OR FUEL FILTER, A BLOB OF THAT SEALANT CLOGED THE LINE AND STARVED THE ENGINE OF FUEL!!

The pilot made one of the best deadstick, wheels up landings I have ever seen in 40 years of buying geared up airplanes!

The field was smooth, with new plantings, so there was no corn to damage the leading edges!

The fiberglass 1 piece belly mod is the type with 2 reinforced “strakes” that protrude from the flat belly panel, and the airplane slide mostly on them.

2 fin antennas are broken off, and 2 of the former belly ribs are slightly deformed from the weight on them (not torn or scraped).

AND THAT IS THE EXTENT OF THE AIRFRAME DAMAGE TO THIS AIRCRAFT!!!

***NO DAMAGE to any of the LANDING GEAR!

***NO DAMAGE to the WING, FLAP, AILERON, or UPSWEPT TIP!

***NO DAMAGE to any of the FUSELAGE STRUCTURE except those 2 formers in the belly!

*** NO DAMAGE to the GEAR DOORS, not even the nose gear doors, except paint on the noses!

*** NO DAMAGE to the TAILCONE or TAIL FEATHERS!

***NO DAMAGE to the COWLING, COWL FLAP or even the EXHAUST!

The 3 blade McCauley prop is bent on all 3 blades, (not under power).

***NO DAMAGE to the polished 3 blade SPINNER!

Inside, the Tan custom LEATHER interior is in fantastic condition!

Notice the custom detailing on the 2 tone side panels and armrests!

Equipped for cross country flight with:

*** King KFC 200 Autopilot with HSI, Flight Director, Auto and manual trim, Altitude hold and Glideslope coupling!

*** King KMA 24 Audio panel, king KT76A mode C transponder and Uavionics ADSB out tailbeacon, 4 place intercom and GEM EGT/EGT scanner

Wired for and trays still installed for GNS 530W and SL30 navcom, these panel units are not included.   Slide in replacements or upgrade, without investing in what you don’t want!

Sold with logbooks for the airframe since day 1 !

Engine has logs since factory reman 5/10/1993.

Installed in this airplane 6/10/1993 as part of the S.T.C.

Time since major is 969smoh in 2002.

Prop is 439 spoh.

Interestingly, the Rocket conversion uses the propellor from the same 340/414 airplanes that the engine came from, so these props are readily available, we even have a core for sale!!

And we coincidently also have a freshly overhauled NB waiting to be test run at the engine shop, if you would prefer to buy an engine you could bolt on rather than do a prop strike inspection on the currently installed engine.
