This is a real deal Stewart Warner 3,000 RPM back/rear mount tachometer. The model number is 557EP and the date code is P9. The date decodes as September, 1946. There is also an ink stamped date on the back that reads OCT 10 1946 as shown. Based on what I have found, I believe this was originally a aircraft tachometer, likely out of a Piper Cub. Please confirm your specific application. This is an awesome and very hard to find vintage tachometer.

The face is easy to read some delamination of the artwork and a cylindrical scuff that look like the needle was rubbing it. This is a rear mount style gauge that mounts from the back of the dash. The back of the tach is very clean as shown with ink stampings intact. This is simply and awesome survivor tach!
The indicator needle does move smoothly when the input on the back is turned and returns to zero as it should.
