Original circa 1959 Raytheon Company ARSR-1A (Amplitron Kit) Field Test Procedures technical manual, produced by Raytheon’s Electronic Services Division in Waltham, Massachusetts.

This scarce Cold War-era technical manual covers the field testing and FAA acceptance procedures used when installing Raytheon’s Amplitron modification in existing ARSR-1 Air Route Surveillance Radar systems. Installation of the Amplitron upgrade converted the radar to the ARSR-1A configuration.

The manual contains approximately 50 pages of detailed procedures covering pre-installation ARSR-1 readings, compressor and control-function checks, antenna door interlock and radiate tests, power supply tests, coolant system tests, power measurements, receiver sensitivity, cancellation ratio and subclutter visibility, noise figure readings, RF spectrum checks, VSWR readings, and the 72-hour Amplitron Kit test.

The title page states that the field test procedures were approved by the Federal Aviation Agency (FAA) and identifies the document as UNCLASSIFIED. The preface discusses FAA acceptance of the Amplitron installations and returning each modified ARSR-1A radar to commissioned air traffic control service.

A fascinating original technical document from the early development of America’s long-range air traffic control radar network and Raytheon’s high-power microwave technology.

Vintage condition with age-related wear, discoloration and handling consistent with an original working technical manual. Please review photos carefully for condition and contents.
