WWII Aircraft Part - US Navy Hickok Mfg. Cylinder Head Temperature Instrument
One wartime Cylinder Head Temperature Instrument manufactured by for US Navy by Hickok. Nice big old instrument that let the flying types observe cylinder head temperature on a radial engine and made intentionally big so that even the practially blind could read it. It's similar to the Type B-9 unit that would have been found in both Army Air Forces and USN aircraft during the war years. Standard 3 1/8" in panel mount here. Nothing special. This one was built for Navy service as evidenced by the maker's contract number data and the paint markings.
Metal data plate reads:
HICKOK
CONTRACT NO. NOA(S) 540
F.S.S.C. NO. R88-1-2650-100
M.F.R.'S PART NO. 5814
SERIAL NO. 24978
Ink stamped on back:
USE 2 OHM LEADS
COPPER CONSTANTAN
This is a complete 3 1/8" panel mount instrument. Although the case and the glass and front are perfect, I see some light rusting issues on the inside face plate toward the top of the face plate panel. I don't know if that's where the paint was thin and moisture invaded it, but there's a little rusting. It's visible and renders this instrument to a "good" or "fair" condition. This is odd in that the back of the instrument case isn't rusted at all - and it's a steel case with light cad plating. The graphic markings are bright and perfect, but the photo series shows the light rust patina there up top. No dust or bugs or dirt behind the glass. Perfect panel filler if you are rebuilding a trainer or fighter panel. For an 80-year-old instrument it's got nice sharp graphics and markings. Black bakelite plastic case. Glass is perfect. No other paperwork or documents come with this instrument. Note the steel instrument panel keeper nuts on the back of the case.
Rated for 0-350 degrees C AS MARKED 0-3.5 X 100. The B-9 ranged from 0-300. Used in conjunction with a thermocouple on a designated cylinder. Big old heavy metal case. We got this in a warehouse inventory purchase decades ago.
Radium faced? YES. ABSOLUTELY. As such this sale is CONUS ONLY. International purchase will be cancelled as we do not have proper export license for military hardware and if scanned and any radium detected the instrument is confiscated and destroyed by Customs. Much as we like to support restoration projects out-of-country, please be advised this instrument isn't for you.
Ships cheapest via USPS Ground Advantage or FedEx Ground unless you direct otherwise. Questions? Please ask seller. And thanks for looking!
