Item Description:
The Story For the last decade (since 2015), this incredible piece of aviation history has sat proudly on the desk in my home office. It hasn’t been sitting in a damp barn or a scrapyard; it has been a cherished display piece in a climate-controlled, smoke-free home. I originally bought it at auction to honor my grandfather’s 30+ year career in aerospace, but it is now time to pass it on to a new custodian who can appreciate its engineering.
The Pedigree (Why this unit is special) This is a genuine Collins 331A-6G Course Indicator, manufactured just up the road from me by the legendary Collins Radio Company in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Unlike generic surplus parts, this unit tells a story:
"Copilot" Provenance: The vintage masking tape on the top case is hand-marked "Copilot". This instrument spent its life in the right-hand seat, guiding the First Officer.
Duncan Aviation Seal: The case bears a service sticker from Duncan Aviation (Lincoln, NE). In the aviation world, this is the gold standard. It means this unit wasn't just pulled from a wreck; it was professionally maintained and cared for during its service life.
Low Serial Number: The data plate shows Serial No. 224. This is a rare, early-production model, making it highly collectible.
Condition Notes Because I do not have a 400Hz aircraft power supply in my home office, I have not powered it up recently. However, visually, it is in stunning shape. The glass is clear, the high-contrast "Aircraft" symbol and compass card are vibrant, and the mechanical "flags" are intact. It is a heavy, solid piece of equipment (weighs 6.5 lbs!) that feels like it was built to last forever.
I am selling this AS IS as a collectible/display piece, but given its clean condition and the fact that it has been safely stored indoors for years, it presents beautifully.
